Ecuador’s official currency is the United States dollar. Ecuadorian coins representing fractions of a dollar, but only valid in Ecuador, are also in circulation.
Take sufficient cash with you when travelling outside the principal cities and towns since automatic teller machines (ATM´s) are few and far between.
Other currencies must be exchanged in “Bureaus de Change”.
Avoid carrying shoulder bags. Keep your traveler check receipts separate from the originals and maintain a sequential record of those exchanged.
Exchange Rate at 21th September 2009
